How this part works

FCE Reading Part 6 is gapped text: a passage with sentences removed. You put the missing sentences back so cohesion holds — pronouns, linkers, and topic continuity. It is less about “what the article is about” and more about what must come next.
This part punishes people who match a repeated noun and ignore this/these/such and contrast markers (however, instead). One sentence that fits the topic but breaks a pronoun chain is wrong. Train yourself to read the sentence before the gap and the sentence after it as a pair.
Test 1: pencil the pronoun in each option and hunt for its referent in the paragraph. Check answers and write why the distractor failed (wrong referent, wrong contrast, extra idea). Test 2 is for sequence speed. Gapped text is where FCE reading timing often collapses if you reread the whole text for every gap.

- What is FCE Reading Part 6?
- Gapped text. Sentences have been removed from a passage and you restore them so the text is coherent. Clues are pronouns, linkers, and logical sequence — not just topic words.
- Why do I keep choosing a sentence that “fits the topic”?
- Topic overlap is the distractor. The right sentence also fits grammar around the gap: this/these, time order, and contrast. If a pronoun has nothing to point to, the option is wrong.

- Should I do Part 6 before Part 5?
- On exam day Part 5 comes first. In training, if cohesion is your weakness, drill Part 6 on its own so you stop spending Part 5 time rereading.
