How this part works

FCE Use of English Part 2 is open cloze: a text with eight gaps and no options. You write one word only — usually a preposition, article, auxiliary, pronoun, or linker. If you can recognise the right word in Part 1 but cannot produce it here, this is the part that exposes the gap.
Spelling counts. Contractions are risky. Cambridge wants the function word that holds the sentence together, not a fancy synonym. A wrong article or a missing “to” after a verb is a lost mark even when the meaning is obvious to you.
Work Test 1 by reading the full sentence before the gap, then the sentence after it. Most answers are grammatical glue, not topic vocabulary. After you check answers, copy each gap with three words of context into a notebook. Test 2 should be timed: open cloze is fast on exam day if the patterns are automatic.

- How many words can I write in Part 2?
- One word per gap. Two words, a hyphenated guess, or a conjugated form Cambridge did not want will score zero even if the meaning is close.
- What kind of words appear in open cloze?
- Mostly grammar: articles, prepositions, auxiliaries, pronouns, and linkers. Topic nouns almost never fill a Part 2 gap.
- Can I use contractions?
- Treat a contraction as two words in your head. If the gap allows only one word, write the full form Cambridge expects (for example not instead of n’t attached to another word).
